The Fall Scholarship Application period has ended. Please check back the fall of 2014.

The Mitchell Technical Institute Foundation offers endowed scholarships customarily ranging from $100 to $1,000 for MTI students on an annual basis. In addition, the Foundation board and staff work with a number of individuals, financial institutions, businesses, community groups and associations that make direct grants to MTI students. These additional grants are awarded in conjunction with various technical programs at MTI or locally based organizations and often require specific criteria for eligibility.

General MTI Foundation Scholarship Information:
  • The scholarship application period will be open November 1 through December 13 each school year. 
  • MTI students will be contacted via their MTI email with further information as the application period nears. 
  • Individuals must  be a currently enrolled student to apply for any scholarships through the MTI Foundation.

Agriculture Freshman Scholarship

Detail:

The Freshman Agriculture Scholarship is funded yearly from a donation received after the students volunteer their time parking cars during Dakota Fest activities. The scholarship will be awarded mid-March each year and applied to the recipient's account the following Fall semester. The scholarship committee will make the award selection along with input from the Agriculture instructors.

Criteria:

  • Applicant must be currently enrolled as a first year full-time student in the Agricultural Technology program 
  • Award will be based on GPA, essay responses and references
  • Applicants must complete the MTI online application during the open application period  as instructed to be eligible for this scholarship.

Agriculture Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Detail:

During the course of MTI's history, MTI instructors, students, alumni and family have established scholarship funds in memory of Ag students, alumni or Ag Board members.

  • B.J. Stoeser - was a 1982 graduate of the Ag program and was killed in a car accident in October, 1987.  He was remembered as tough, enthusiastic and persistent with excellent leadership skills.
  • Bryan Larson - was a 1981 graduate of the Ag program.  
  • Dennis Boehmer - attended the Ag program in 1980-81.  He succumbed to cancer between his first and second year of school.
  • Topper Largent -was an Ag Advisory Board member.  Largent was killed in a plane crash near Hot Springs, SD.

These scholarship will be awarded to students who exhibit outstanding leadership qualities.  The scholarships will be awarded mid-March each year and applied to the recipient's account the following Fall semester.

  • Applicant must be currently enrolled as a first year full-time student in the MTI Agricultural Technology program

Detail:

The scholarship will be awarded mid-January each year for second year students and applied to recipient's Spring semester account, or mid-March each year for first year students and applied to the recipient's account the following Fall semester.

The recipient will be selected by the scholarship committee with HCT instructor input.

Criteria:

  • Applicants must be currently enrolled as a first or second year full-time student in MTI's Heating and Cooling Technology program and must be pursuing an Associate's in Applied Science (AAS) degree
  • Applicants must complete the MTI online application during the open application period as instructed to be eligible for this scholarship
  • Applicants must be members of the SD Chapter of ASHRAE
  • Applicants must demonstrate financial need as determined by the FAFSA (universal financial aid application form)

Associated General Contractors (ACG) is a South Dakota trade association that represents the interests of the construction industry.

The Building Chapter is headquartered in Sioux Falls, SD and the members primarily build commercial buildings.  Their scholarship objective is to help a young person enter a construction-related trade.  They began offering a scholarship in the 2012-13 school year.  The scholarship will be awarded mid-March each year and applied to the recipient's account the following Fall semester.

Criteria:

  • Applicant must be currently attending MTI as a first year, full-time student in Architectural Design and Building Construction, Heating and Cooling Technology, Electrical Construction and Maintenance or Welding and Manufacturing Technology programs
  • Applicants must complete the MTI online application during the open application period as instructed to be eligible for this scholarship
  • Maintain a GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Demonstrate financial need as determined by the FAFSA (universal financial aid application)
  • Review of instructor recommendations
Avera Queen of Peace Endowed Scholarships

Detail:

Avera Queen of Peace is a leading supporter and partner of Mitchell Technical Institute.  An endowment was established in 2002 and now provides scholarships each year to MTI's Health Science programs. The scholarship recipient will be awarded mid-March each year and applied to recipient's account the following Fall semester.

Criteria
  • Applicant must be currently attending MTI as a first year, full-time student in a Health Sciences program (Medical Assistant, Medical Laboratory Assistant, Radiation Therapy, Radiologic Technology, Medical Office Professional, Online Medical Office Professional,  Speech-Language Pathology Assistant and Online Speech-Language Pathology Assistant)
  • Applicant must have completed at least one semester of a multi-semester program
  • Oral / Written recommendations from instructors may be requested by scholarship selection committee 
  • Applicants must complete the MTI online application during the open application period as instructed to be eligible for this scholarship
Bartels Endowed Scholarships

Details:

Keith & Glynn Bartels have been active and instrumental members of the Mitchell Technical Institute Foundation and have a passion for education and Mitchell Technical Institute.  They have chosen to establish a scholarship endowment with the MTI Foundation which provides two $500 scholarships each year.

The scholarship will be awarded to any Power Line recipients early January  each year and applied to recipient's account in the Spring semester.   All other scholarships will be awarded mid-March each year and applied to the recipient's account the following Fall semester.

The scholarship was established in 2012 by Big Sioux Power Sports in Sioux Falls.  The scholarship will be awarded mid-March each year and applied to the recipient's account the following Fall semester.

  • Applicant must be currently enrolled full-time as a first year student in the Power Sports and Marine Technology program at MTI with plans to complete an AAS degree in Power Sports Technology

The Endowment was established in 2010 with the first scholarship provided in the 2011/12 school year.  The scholarship will be awarded mid-March each year and applied to the recipient's account the following Fall semester.

  • Applicant must be a U.S. citizen and have attended school in the Mitchell area
  • Applicant must be involved with student leadership
  • Applicant must be currently enrolled full-time at Mitchell Technical Institute and be within two years of MTI graduation

  • Applicant must demonstrate financial need according to FAFSA

The Communications fully-funded endowment was created in December, 2003.

The scholarship will be awarded mid-March each year and applied to the recipient's account the following Fall semester.

Dennis Knouse Memorial Scholarship

Details:  The fund was established in 2013 by family, friends and co-workers of Dennis Knouse. Knouse was a 1979 Electrical Construction and Maintenance graduate from Huron, SD who died in a motorcycle accident in 2010. Funds for the scholarships are provided by a Poker Run held each summer. The scholarship will be announced mid-March each year and applied to the recipient's account the following Fall semester.

Criteria:
  • Applicant must be currently enrolled as a first year full-time student in the Electrical Construction & Maintenance, Power Line or Electrical Utilities & Substation Technology at MTI  
  • Applicant must complete the MTI current student online application during the open application period as instructed to be eligible for this scholarship
  • The scholarship will be awarded mid-January to any PowerLine recipients and applied to their account for the second semester. The scholarship will be awarded mid-March to the ECM or EUST recipients and applied to their account the following fall semester.

Details:  The endowment was established in 2012 by the family of former MTI Power Line instructor, Dennis Merchant.  Merchant spent his entire working career in the power line industry and taught the Power Line Technology program at MTI from 1974 to 1988.  He and his wife Dorothy then made their business, Merchant Job Training and Safety Program, their priority.  Merchant passed away in February, 2012.  His family continues to run this business now located in Brookings, SD.  The scholarship will be announced mid-January each year and applied to the recipient's account the Spring semester.

  • Applicant must be enrolled full-time in the MTI Power Line Construction and Maintenance program 
  • Applicant must maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher

The scholarships will be awarded mid-March and a check disbursed at the Ag Graduation Banquet once the recipient meets the requirements of graduation for the Agriculture Technology program.

Criteria:
  • Applicant must be currently enrolled full-time as a second-year student in the Agricultural Technology program with plans to graduate with an AAS degree within the current school year.

Details:

Home Builders of the Sioux Empire has been offering scholarships to MTI Architectural Design and Building Construction students since 2003.   

The scholarships will be applied to the recipient's accounts in September.

The recipients of these scholarships will be selected by a committee comprised of ADBC instructors and MTI staff.

Criteria:

  • Two scholarships will be awarded by August 1 to accepted incoming students in the Architectural Design and Building Construction program who meet the listed criteria,  have completed the MTI incoming student online application and provided an online reference between February 1 and June 30.  
  • Two scholarships will be issued in September to students currently enrolled as full-time second year Architectural and Building Construction students. Students must complete the online application in the spring of their first year as instructed to be eligible for these scholarships
  • Scholarship recipients must be members of the NAHB in order to receive the scholarships

The Bainbridge Family is a dedicated supporter of MTI's Agriculture programs and the MTI Foundation. The scholarship will be awarded mid-March each year to a Farm Power Technology student and applied to the recipient's account the following Fall semester.

Mark and Kathy Hofer began their scholarship support of the Wind Turbine Technology program in 2010.  Mark has served on the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association board and has realized the importance of education to young people.

The scholarship will be awarded mid-March each year and applied to the recipient's account the following Fall semester.

The scholarships will be awarded by mid-January for PNG and PL recipients and applied to their account the Spring semester or mid-March for ECM, SCADA and WTT two-year program recipients and applied to their accounts the following Fall semester.

Martin and Maude Osterhaus established this endowed scholarship in 1995 to provide financial support for two deserving MTI students each year.

The scholarship will be awarded mid-March each year and applied to the recipient's account the following Fall semester.

  • Applicant must be a currently enrolled first year full-time student in any two year program
  • Applicant must demonstrate financial need as determined by the FAFSA (universal financial aid application form)

OtterTail Power Company Scholarships

Details:

OtterTail Power Company has been a excellent industry partner and not only provides MTI with scholarship support but provides valuable information and guidance for our programs.  

A portion of the scholarships will be awarded August 1 to accepted, incoming students who meet the listed criteria, have completed the MTI incoming student online application and provided an online reference between February 1 and June 30.  The funds will be applied to the recipient's account for the Fall semester.  Scholarship funds available for 2014 include 2 at $1000 for EUST, 2 at $500 for SCADA, 2 at $500 for Power Line,  2 at  $500 for WTT, and 2 at $500 for ECM.

Additional scholarships will be awarded early January each year for Power Line and EUST current student recipients and applied to their account the Spring semester, or mid-March each year for ECM, WTT (two-year) and SCADA recipients and applied to their accounts the following Fall semester.

Criteria:
  • Applicant must be accepted or currently enrolled as a full-time student in Power Line, EUST, ECM, WTT (2 year), EUST and SCADA programs
  • Applicant must maintain a GPA of 3.25 or higher
  • Applicant must complete the appropriate  MTI online application form during the open application period and provide an online reference if requested to be eligible for this scholarship
  • First consideration for scholarship awards will be given to applicants whose hometowns are included in the OtterTail Power Company service area

Rick Kostelecky Endowed Scholarship

Details:   The endowed scholarship was established by the family of Rick Kostelecky,  a 1982 graduate of the Electrical Construction and Maintenance program.  Kostelecky began his career with Muth Electric in Watertown and Rapid City. In 1993, he joined Interstates Electric Engineering, where he traveled nationwide as a project foreman.  He rejoined Muth Electric in 2004 and settled in the Black Hills.  Rick passed away in August, 2012.  The endowment began providing scholarships in the 2013-2014 school year.  The scholarships will be awarded mid-March each year and applied to the recipient's account the following Fall semester.

Detail:  The endowment was established in 2013 by the family and friends of longtime MTI Ag instructor Roger Carlson.  Carlson began his career at MTI in August, 1990, and was a valued member of the Agriculture Technology department until May, 2011, when health problems forced his retirement. Carlson passed away on August 27, 2012 from complications related to leukemia.

The endowment began providing scholarships in the 2013-14 school year to a qualifying student in the Ag Technology, Architecture Design and Building Construction or Farm Power Technology programs. The scholarship will be awarded mid-March each year and applied to the recipient's account the following Fall semester.

  • Application must be an accepted full-time student enrolled at MTI in the Ag Technology, Architecture Design and Building Construction or Farm Power Technology program
  • Applicant must maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher

Details:  
The scholarship was established in 2013.  The scholarship will be awarded mid-January each year for Electrical Utilities and Substation Technology,  Propane and Natural Gas Technology, and Powerline Construction and Maintenance recipients and applied to their second semester account, or mid-March each year for Accounting and Business Management, Ag Technology, Electrical Construction and Maintenance, Farm Power Technology, Telecommunications, Utilities Technology/Powerline and Wind Turbine Technology recipients and applied to their account the following fall semester.

South Dakota Crop Improvement Association Scholarship

Details:

The scholarship will be awarded to a first year student enrolled in the Ag Technology program and applied to the recipient's account the following Fall semester..

Criteria:

The scholarship is awarded to a student who has exhibited outstanding leadership qualities.  The scholarship award will be announced mid-March each year and applied to the recipient's account the following Fall semester.

Details:  The Tessier Family Foundation began providing funds for scholarships in 2014 for students enrolled in the Accounting/Business Management, Heating and Cooling Technology and Medical Assistant programs.  One $500 scholarship will be provided for each program.  

Criteria:  
  • Applicant must be currently enrolled as a first year full-time student in Accounting/Business Management, Heating and Cooling Technology or Medical Assistant programs to be eligible for these scholarships.
  • Applicant must complete the MTI current student online application during the open application period as instructed to be eligible for these scholarships.

Thomsen Family Enterprises Endowed Scholarships
$500 each (2 Available)

Details:

The first endowed fund for scholarships at Mitchell Technical Institute, the GF Thomsen Family Scholarship has been awarded annually since 1985.  First preference for the scholarship is to dependents of employees or employees themselves of Thomsen Enterprises companies of Mitchell.  If no applicants meet this criteria a Mitchell area high school graduate may receive the scholarship.  The scholarship will be awarded mid-January each year for second year students and applied to their account the Spring semester, and mid-March for first year students and applied to the recipient's account the following Fall semester.

Criteria:

  • Applicant must currently be enrolled as a first or second year full-time student at MTI and completed at least one semester of classes. 
  • Applicant or applicant's parents must work at Tumbleweed, Highland Travel Plaza, Highland Conference Center or Hampton Inn in Mitchell, SD
  • Applicant must promote leadership skills as demonstrated in application form
  • Applicant must complete the MTI online application during the open application period as instructed to be eligible for this scholarship
  • Applicant is eligible to receive the scholarship all years of attendance at MTI as long as the criteria is met and the applicant completes the online application each year

Details:  The scholarships will be awarded mid-January for Power Line, Electrical Utilities and Substation, and Propane Natural Gas recipients and applied to their second semester account, or mid-March for Automation Controls/SCADA, and Wind Turbine recipients and applied to their accounts the following fall semester. 

Criteria: 
    Applicants must be first or second year students currently enrolled full-time in the following programs:
  •        Power Line
  •         Electrical Utilities and Substation
  •         Propane Natural Gas
  •         Automation Controls/SCADA 
  •         Wind Turbine Technology

    Applicant must complete the MTI current student online application during the open application period as instructed to be eligible
