MTI offers a variety of scholarships to qualified applicants. Click here for a list of scholarships. MTI also accepts any scholarships brought in by entering or returning students. Several websites offer lists of scholarships and application processes. REMEMBER: If someone attempts to charge or bill you for a listing of scholarships, chances are it is not a legitimate service. Detail:

During the course of MTI's history, MTI instructors, students, alumni and family have established scholarship funds in memory of Ag. students, alumni or Ag. Board members.

  • B.J. Stoeser - was a 1982 graduate of the Ag. program and was killed in a car accident in October, 1987.  He was remembered as tough, enthusiastic and persistent with excellent leadership skills.
  • Bryan Larson - was a 1981 graduate of the Ag. program.  
  • Dennis Boehmer - attended the MTI Ag. program in 1980-81.  He succumbed to cancer between his first and second year of school.
  • Topper Largent -was an Ag. Advisory Board member.  Largent was killed in a plane crash near Hot Springs, SD.

These scholarship will be awarded to students who exhibit outstanding leadership qualities.  The scholarships will be awarded mid-March each year and applied to the recipient's account the following Fall semester.

  • Applicant must be currently enrolled as a first year fulltime student in the MTI Agricultural Technology program

The Freshman Agriculture Scholarship is funded yearly from a donation received after the students volunteer their time parking cars during Dakota Fest activities. Associated General Contractors (ACG) is a South Dakota trade association that represents the interests of the construction industry.

The Building Chapter is headquartered in Sioux Falls, SD and the members primarily build commercial buildings.  Their scholarship objective is to help a young person enter a construction-related trade.  They will began offering a $2000 scholarship for the 2012-13 school year.  The scholarship will be awarded mid-March each year and applied to the recipient's account the following Fall semester.

Criteria:

  • Applicant must be currently attending MTI as a first year, fulltime student in Architectural Design and Building Construction, Heating and Cooling Technology, Electrical Construction and Maintenance or Welding and Manufacturing Technology programs

Avera Queen of Peace is a leading supporter and partner of Mitchell Technical Institute.  An endowment was established in 2002 and now provides scholarships each year to MTI's Health Science programs. Keith & Glynn Bartels have been active and instrumental members of the Mitchell Technical Institute Foundation and have a passion for education and Mitchell Technical Institute.  They have chosen to establish a scholarship endowment with the MTI Foundation which provides two $500 scholarships each year.

The scholarship will be awarded to any Power Line recipients early January  each year and applied to recipient's account in the Spring semester.   All other scholarships will be awarded mid-March each year and applied to the recipient's account the following Fall semester.

Scholarship funding is provided by the John Clarke Family, owners of County Fair Foods stores. The scholarship will be awarded mid-December each year if the recipient is a second year student and applied to the recipient's account during the Spring semester.  The scholarship will be awarded mid-March if the recipient is a first year student and applied to the recipient's account the following Fall semester.  

Criteria: 

  • Applicant must be a fulltime student currently enrolled at MTI
  • Applicant must have worked (or have mother/father who has worked) at County Fair Foods, Mitchell for a minimum of 3 months prior to award
  • Applicant must have GPA of 2.5 or better

Detail:

David Grode was the Superintendent of Schools at Plankinton, SD.  He was killed in the propane explosion that destroyed the school on November 17, 2000.  In memorial to him, his family has established this scholarship to aid in training Propane & Natural Gas Technology students.  David was also an avid woodworker, therefore his family requests that ADBC students be given the opportunity to apply for this scholarship as well.

The scholarship will be awarded mid-April to an accepted, incoming students who meets the listed criteria.

  • Applicant must  be an accepted student enrolled at MTI in Propane & Natural Gas Technologies or Architectural Design and Building Construction

Details:   The fund was established in 2013 by family, friends and co-workers of Dennis Knouse.  Knouse was a 1979 Electrical Construction and Maintenance graduate from Huron, SD who died in a motorcycle accident in 2010.    Funds for the scholarships are provided by a Poker Run held each summer.

The scholarship will be awarded mid-March and a check disbursed at the Ag Graduation Banquet once the recipient meets the requirements of graduation for the Agriculture Technology program.

Criteria:
  • Applicant must be currently enrolled full-time as a second-year student in the Agricultural Technology program with plans to graduate with an AAS degree within the current school year.

The Gary Plagmann Memorial Scholarship was established by his family in 2011.  Gary was involved in the Telecommunications Industry in South Dakota, Iowa and Minnesota for nearly 40 years and participated in many rural telephone company upgrades during his career.  The scholarship will be awarded mid-April to an accepted, incoming student who meets the listed criteria.  The funds will be applied to the recipient's account for the Fall semester.

The MTI Alumni Association hosts a golf tournament each September for students currently enrolled at MTI.  Random drawings are held for scholarship funds and prizes.  2012 scholarship awards totaled $5000.  The next tourney is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 16, 2013. 

Criteria:

Any student currently enrolled at MTI is eligible to golf for a small registration fee which covers greens fees, cart and lunch.

This scholarship was established by MTI in 2012.  The scholarships will be awarded to any students attending MTI who have a parent, step-parent, grandparent or sibling who has graduated from MTI. 

Criteria:
  • Applicant will be awarded $500 upon verification of family member graduation at MTI
  • Completion of the first year of a two year program with a 2.5 GPA or higher will renew the award for another $500 for the student's second year
  • Application for the MTI Legacy Scholarship should be completed through the Admissions Office at MTI

These scholarships are provided to incoming students enrolled at MTI.  The funding for this scholarship is provided by the contributions to the MTI Foundation by the staff and faculty of Mitchell Technical Institute. The Freshman application is available online February 1 through July 1 each year to students who have been accepted to MTI.  Recipients will be notified of awards prior to the start of the Fall semester.  All awards will be credited to student accounts for the Fall semester.

  • Applicant must complete the MTI Freshman online application between February 1 and July 1 and provide an online reference as instructed to be eligible for the scholarship
  • Applicant must demonstrate financial need as determined by the FAFSA (universal financial aid application form)

The MTI Star Scholarship is a program for those who excel academically.  If you are accepted into an MTI program, have an ACT score of 24 or higher and a high school cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, you will automatically be awarded a Star Scholarship.  Choose to enroll in one of MTI's spotlight programs, keep your grades up, and earn another $1,000 for your second year.  (MTI cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher is required for renewal.)

Muth Electric has been a valued supporter of MTI's Electrical Construction and Maintenance program for several years by providing scholarship funds, supplies and industry support.

Applications will be handed out by ECM instructors.  The scholarships will be awarded during the Spring semester.

The recipient(s) of this (these) scholarship(s) will be selected by a committee comprised of Muth Electric staff, ECM instructors and MTI staff.

The Myrtle Smith Memorial is funded by a donation from the family and was established for female students in the Secretarial programs.  It will now provide scholarships for female students in the Accounting & Business Management, Online Small Business Management, Office Technology Specialist, and Online Administrative Office Specialist programs.  The scholarship will be awarded mid-April to an accepted, incoming student who meets the listed criteria. The funds will be applied to the recipient's account for the Fall semester.

The scholarships will be awarded by mid-December for PNG and PL recipients and applied to their account the Spring semester or mid-March for ECM, SCADA and WTT two-year program recipients and applied to their accounts the following Fall semester.

Martin and Maude Osterhaus established this endowed scholarship in 1995 to provide financial support for two deserving MTI students each year.

The scholarship will be awarded mid-March each year and applied to the recipient's account the following Fall semester.

  • Applicant must demonstrate financial need as determined by the FAFSA (universal financial aid application form)

Otter Tail Power Company has been a excellent industry partner and not only provides MTI with scholarship support but provides valuable information and guidance for our programs.  

A portion of the scholarships will be awarded mid-April to accepted, incoming students who meet the listed criteria.  The funds will be applied to the recipient's account for the Fall semester.  Scholarship funds available for 2013 include 5 for EUST,  4 for SCADA, 2 for WTT, and 2 for ECM.

Additional scholarships will be awarded early January each year for Power Line and EUST recipients and applied to their account the Spring semester, or mid-March each year for ECM, WTT (two-year) and SCADA recipients and applied to their accounts the following Fall semester.

  • Applicant must be accepted or currently enrolled as a student in Power Line, EUST, ECM, WTT (2 year), EUST and SCADA programs
  • Applicant must maintain a GPA of 3.25 or higher

Thomsen Family Enterprises Endowment

Details:

The first endowed fund for scholarships at Mitchell Technical Institute, the GF Thomsen Family Scholarship has been awarded annually since 1985.  First preference for the scholarship is to dependents of employees or employees themselves of Thomsen Enterprises companies of Mitchell.  If no applicants meet this criteria a Mitchell area high school graduate may receive the scholarship.  The scholarship will be awarded mid-December each year for second year students and applied to their account the Spring semester, and mid-March for first year students and applied to the recipient's account the following Fall semester.

Criteria:

  • Applicant must currently be enrolled as a first or second year full-time student at MTI and completed at least one semester of classes. 
  • Applicant or applicant's parents must work at Tumbleweed, Highland Travel Plaza or Hampton Inn in Mitchell, SD
  • Applicant must promote leadership skills as demonstrated in application form
  • Applicant must complete the MTI online application during the open application period as instructed to be eligible for this scholarship
  • Applicant is eligible to receive the scholarship all years of attendance at MTI as long as the criteria is met and the applicant completes the online application each year
