The Endowment was established in 2010 with the first scholarship provided in the 2011/12 school year.  The scholarship will be awarded mid-March each year and applied to the recipient's account the following Fall semester.

 

Criteria:

  • Applicant must be a U.S. citizen and have attended school in the Mitchell area
  • Applicant must be involved with student leadership
  • Applicant must be currently enrolled full-time at Mitchell Technical Institute and be within two years of MTI graduation
  • Applicant must complete the MTI online application form during the open application period as instructed to be eligible for the scholarship
  • Applicant must maintain a GPA of 2.6
  • Applicant must demonstrate financial need according to FAFSA
  • Scholarship award may be retained for 4 semesters or put on hold for military service
  • Applicant must permit selection committee to solicit oral or written recommendation from instructor or administrator

Dennis Knouse Memorial Scholarship

Details:  The fund was established in 2013 by family, friends and co-workers of Dennis Knouse. Knouse was a 1979 Electrical Construction and Maintenance graduate from Huron, SD who died in a motorcycle accident in 2010. Funds for the scholarships are provided by a Poker Run held each summer. The scholarship will be announced mid-March each year and applied to the recipient's account the following Fall semester.

Criteria:
  • Applicant must be currently enrolled as a first year full-time student in the Electrical Construction & Maintenance, Power Line or Electrical Utilities & Substation Technology at MTI  
  • Applicant must complete the MTI current student online application during the open application period as instructed to be eligible for this scholarship
  • The scholarship will be awarded mid-January to any PowerLine recipients and applied to their account for the second semester. The scholarship will be awarded mid-March to the ECM or EUST recipients and applied to their account the following fall semester.
  • Applicant must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Financial need and indication of strong desire to make a career in the field required

MTI Legacy Scholarship

Detail:

This scholarship was established by MTI in 2012.  The scholarships will be awarded to any students attending MTI who have a parent, step-parent, grandparent or sibling who has graduated from MTI. 

Criteria:
  • Applicant will be awarded $500 upon verification of family member graduation at MTI
  • Completion of the first year of a two year program with a 2.5 GPA or higher will renew the award for another $500 for the student's second year
  • Application for the MTI Legacy Scholarship should be completed through the Admissions Office at MTI

Details:

These scholarships are provided to full-time incoming students enrolled at MTI.  The funding for this scholarship is provided by the contributions to the MTI Foundation by the staff and faculty of Mitchell Technical Institute.  Recipients will be notified of awards mid-April.  All awards will be credited to student accounts for the Fall semester.

Criteria:
  • Applicant must complete the MTI incoming student online application and provide an online reference between February 1 and March 31 to be eligible for the scholarship
  • Applicant must demonstrate financial need as determined by the FAFSA (universal financial aid application form)

MTI Star Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsor: MTI Star Scholarship
$1000 each
The MTI Star Scholarship is a program for those who excel academically.  If you are accepted into an MTI program, have an ACT score of 24 or higher and a high school cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, you will automatically be awarded a Star Scholarship.  Choose to enroll in one of MTI's spotlight programs, keep your grades up, and earn another $1,000 for your second year.  (MTI cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher is required for renewal.)

Osterhaus Endowed Scholarships

Details:

Martin and Maude Osterhaus established this endowed scholarship in 1995 to provide financial support for two deserving MTI students each year.

The scholarship will be awarded mid-March each year and applied to the recipient's account the following Fall semester.

Criteria:
  • Applicant must be a currently enrolled first year full-time student in any two year program
  • Applicant must demonstrate financial need as determined by the FAFSA (universal financial aid application form)
  • Applicant must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Applicant must complete the MTI online application during the open application period as instructed to be eligible for this scholarship 
  • Applicant must have good leadership skills

OtterTail Power Company Scholarships

Details:

OtterTail Power Company has been a excellent industry partner and not only provides MTI with scholarship support but provides valuable information and guidance for our programs.  

A portion of the scholarships will be awarded August 1 to accepted, incoming students who meet the listed criteria, have completed the MTI incoming student online application and provided an online reference between February 1 and June 30.  The funds will be applied to the recipient's account for the Fall semester.  Scholarship funds available for 2014 include 2 at $1000 for EUST, 2 at $500 for SCADA, 2 at $500 for Power Line,  2 at  $500 for WTT, and 2 at $500 for ECM.

Additional scholarships will be awarded early January each year for Power Line and EUST current student recipients and applied to their account the Spring semester, or mid-March each year for ECM, WTT (two-year) and SCADA recipients and applied to their accounts the following Fall semester.

Criteria:
  • Applicant must be accepted or currently enrolled as a full-time student in Power Line, EUST, ECM, WTT (2 year), EUST and SCADA programs
  • Applicant must maintain a GPA of 3.25 or higher
  • Applicant must complete the appropriate  MTI online application form during the open application period and provide an online reference if requested to be eligible for this scholarship
  • First consideration for scholarship awards will be given to applicants whose hometowns are included in the OtterTail Power Company service area
  • Applicant must demonstrate financial need as determined by the FAFSA (universal financial aid application form)
South Dakota Assoc. of Cooperatives Scholarship

Details:  
The scholarship was established in 2013.  The scholarship will be awarded mid-January each year for Electrical Utilities and Substation Technology,  Propane and Natural Gas Technology, and Powerline Construction and Maintenance recipients and applied to their second semester account, or mid-March each year for Accounting and Business Management, Ag Technology, Electrical Construction and Maintenance, Farm Power Technology, Telecommunications, Utilities Technology/Powerline and Wind Turbine Technology recipients and applied to their account the following fall semester.

Criteria:
  • Applicant must be an accepted full-time student enrolled at MTI in one of the programs mentioned
  • Applicant must complete the MTI scholarship application during the open application period as instructed to be eligible for this scholarship
  • First priority will be given to students with ties to a SDAC member cooperative
  • Essay responses will be a large part of the recipient decision

Thomsen Family Enterprises Endowed Scholarships

Details:

The first endowed fund for scholarships at Mitchell Technical Institute, the GF Thomsen Family Scholarship has been awarded annually since 1985.  First preference for the scholarship is to dependents of employees or employees themselves of Thomsen Enterprises companies of Mitchell.  If no applicants meet this criteria a Mitchell area high school graduate may receive the scholarship.  The scholarship will be awarded mid-January each year for second year students and applied to their account the Spring semester, and mid-March for first year students and applied to the recipient's account the following Fall semester.

Criteria:

  • Applicant must currently be enrolled as a first or second year full-time student at MTI and completed at least one semester of classes. 
  • Applicant or applicant's parents must work at Tumbleweed, Highland Travel Plaza, Highland Conference Center or Hampton Inn in Mitchell, SD
  • Applicant must promote leadership skills as demonstrated in application form
  • Applicant must complete the MTI online application during the open application period as instructed to be eligible for this scholarship
  • Applicant is eligible to receive the scholarship all years of attendance at MTI as long as the criteria is met and the applicant completes the online application each year

Details:  The scholarships will be awarded mid-January for Power Line, Electrical Utilities and Substation, and Propane Natural Gas recipients and applied to their second semester account, or mid-March for Automation Controls/SCADA, and Wind Turbine recipients and applied to their accounts the following fall semester.

    Applicants must be first or second year students currently enrolled full-time in the following programs:
