Mitchell Technical Institute will be offering a unique online educational program in Fall 2014 for aspiring MRI and CT technologists. The Advanced Medical Imaging program was approved Monday by the South Dakota Board of Education. Advanced Medical Imaging will be available as an online program for registered radiologic technologists and graduates of radiologic technology programs who are registry-eligible. Students may complete the program for an Associate of Applied Science degree or exit after completing either the MRI or CT portions and earning a certificate.
Kristi Rayman, BS RT (R,M,CT,MR), has been hired to develop the program and teach the new courses. This program is funded in part through a grant awarded under the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) program as implemented by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, job openings for radiologic technologists will rise 21% by 2022, much faster than the average for all occupations. Technologists with advanced skills such as in MRI and CT will be in even greater demand due to an aging population, more sophisticated diagnostic capabilities, and health legislation that will expand the number of patients who have access to health insurance.
MTI president Greg Von Wald was pleased with the program approval. “MTI has a long history of providing outstanding graduates to the health care industry in general, and to Radiologic Technology in particular. This new program will allow our alumni and anyone else employed at the technologist level to increase their skills and enhance their employment opportunities.”
The program will begin in August.
