Mitchell—The Mitchell Technical Institute Student Representative Board (SRB) has selected the Teacher of the Year for 2013-2014. Julie Gross, a Communications instructor in the General Education department, was presented the award at the recent spring picnic event.
Gross has been a faculty member at MTI since 2011. Before teaching at MTI, she was employed by the Mitchell School District and worked at Second Chance, the alternative school, for a year and a half and at Rosedale Colony for one year. Prior to coming to Mitchell, Gross lived in Pierre, SD, and taught at Capital University Center. Gross is a graduate of the University of Sioux Falls with bachelor’s degrees in English and Sociology, and she earned her master’s degree in English from the University of South Dakota.
Gross said she was “thoroughly surprised and honored” by the award: “I so appreciate being recognized by my students; it means a lot to me.”
Gross lives in Mitchell with her husband Geoff, who is the Activities Director for the Mitchell School District, and their two sons, Garrison and Jamison.
Any student can nominate an instructor for Teacher of the Year. The nominations are evaluated and voted upon by the thirteen-member SRB group. Eighteen instructors were nominated this year.
