Garrett Varilek, a first-year Welding & Manufacturing Technologies student from Rapid City, kicked off the spring rodeo season with a first-place finish at the Jackrabbit Stampede over the weekend in Brookings.
“It feels good to keep improving throughout the year, and continue to build points for the team and myself,” Varilek, the Mavericks’ Fall 2022 Men’s Points Champion, who earned 620 points last season, said. “I am really looking forward to what this year has in store.”
Lainee Schonebaum, a second-year Animal Science student from Burke, and the Fall 2022 Women’s Points Champion with 40 points, took away seventh place in Brookings. Tucker Even, also from Burke and studying Animal Science, placed fifth in steer wrestling.
The Mavericks travel to Ames, Iowa, April 21-22 for the 59th Annual Cyclone Stampede.
